Sigma announces 150mm F2.8 Macro with optical stabilisation (21/09/2010)

Photokina 2010: Sigma has introduced the APO Macro 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM lens with optical image stabilization. It inherits many of the features of its predecessor, the 150mm F2.8 EX DG HSM, including Sigma's Hypersonic Motor for fast and silent autofocus, and a 1:1 maximum magnification ratio. Three SLD elements are used in its 19 element / 13 group design to minimize aberrations, and a 9-blade circular diaphragm promises attractive rendition of out-of-focus regions of the image.

The new Sigma 150mm F2.8 Macro with Optical Stabilisation

  • Large aperture medium telephoto macro lens
  • Sigma’s proprietary Optical Stabilisation system
  • 1:1 Maximum reproduction ratio
  • Rounded 9 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur
  • Three SLD glass elements
The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the Sigma APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM, a large aperture medium telephoto macro lens which incorporates Sigma’s original Optical Stabilizer function.
Successor to the APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG HSM, introduced to market in October 2004, this new OS design offers the latest optical technology. A floating focusing system moves two different lens groups in the optical path to different positions. This system compensates for astigmatic aberration and spherical aberration and provides extremely high optical performance from infinity to 1:1 Macro.

Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction of all types of aberrations and the Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. This lens has superior peripheral brightness and provides sharp, high contrast images even at the maximum apertures.

Equipped with Sigma’s proprietary OS (Optical Stabiliser) function, this lens offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed autofocus as well as full-time manual focus capability.

This lens has a rounded 9 blade diaphragm creating a smooth blur to the out of focus areas of the image. It is also possible to use this lens with Sigma’s optional APO Tele Converters.

Sigma announces stabilised 120-300mm F2.8 telezoom (21/09/2010)

Photokina 2010: Sigma has unveiled the 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM, a revised version of its fast telezoom featuring optical image stabilization and weather-resistant construction. The lens also offers ultrasonic-type HSM autofocus with full-time manual override, and employs both 'F' Low Dispersion and Super Low Dispersion glass to minimize chromatic aberrations. It employs a 9-bladed rounded diaphragm for attractive bokeh, and is fully compatible with Sigma's 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters while maintaining autofocus.

New Sigma Stabilised 120-300mm F2.8 OS Telezoom

  • Large aperture telephoto zoom lens
  • Sigma’s proprietary Optical Stabilisation system
  • Weather resistant sealing connectors
  • Equipped with HSM ensuring quiet and high speed AF
  • Rounded 9 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur
The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the new Sigma APO 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM, which offers improved optical performance. This large aperture zoom lens features Sigma’s OS (Optical Stabilizer) function and weather-resistant design throughout for use in harsh conditions.

One SLD and Two FLD glass elements are used for maximum correction of chromatic aberrations. The Super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting and the lens design incorporates an inner focusing and inner zooming system to ensure sharp images throughout the entire zoom range.

Improved optical performances provides excellent correction of sagittal coma flare and ensures ultra-high resolution, comparable to a fixed focal length lens.

The OS function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible and enables hand held tele-photography.

Incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed AF, while allowing full-time manual focus override. The rounded 9 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image.

The addition of the optional APO 1.4x EX DG and 2x EX DG Tele Converters produces an ultra telephoto zoom lens with AF.

The new Nikon D7000 (Full-HD Video Recording)

Nikon UK, 15 September, 2010 – Nikon launches the D7000, a D-SLR that offers exceptional image quality, reliability and performance packed into a durable and portable body.
Jordi Brinkman, Product Manager for Nikon Europe, says: “The exciting new D7000 is the ideal next camera for D-SLR owners who want to further indulge their passion for photography with a camera that boasts more advanced features providing creative power. It has a new image sensor, EXPEED 2, AF system and metering sensor to ensure great performance in a highly durable body. Exceptional image quality
The D7000 includes a range of new features to ensure superior image quality including 16.2 effective megapixels with the newly developed Nikon DX format CMOS image sensor. The camera boasts a new image-processing engine, EXPEED 2, which delivers higher image quality, higher speed processing and multiple functions with more power. And the D7000’s increased ISO sensitivity (100-6400, extendable up to 25600) ensures exceptional detail with minimal noise when capturing fast moving subjects or in poor light situations, even without the flash.

Outstanding reliability
The D7000’s bright Glass Pentaprism Viewfinder with approximate 100% frame coverage and 0.94x magnification gives you the most precise view and focus of any scene, and it is always ready when you are with a shutter speed of 1/8000s, tested to 150,000 cycles. What is more, the camera is protected by magnesium alloy top and rear covers and has durable sealing against dust and moisture so it is prepared for even the most testing of situations.
When it comes to storage, the D7000 again provides you with maximum reliability. The twin SD memory card slots allow for added storage capacity and give you the freedom to manage your images and video in the way you want to either by saving more of them, keeping different formats separate or always having backup space when you need it.

Nikon releases Speedlight SB-700 flashgun (15/09/2010)

Pre-Photokina 2010: Nikon has announced the Speedlight SB-700 flashgun. With a guide number of 38 (at ISO 100 at 120mm on an FX camera), it is a more powerful replacement for the SB-600, gaining the operation and handling improvements introduced with the SB-900. Like the SB-600 it offers wireless control and similar recycle times. Its multi-step auto zoom offers extended reach from 24 to 120mm, rather than the 600's 24-85mm. Physical features includes a rotating head, built-in bounce card and a supplied diffuser.

The New Nikon SpeedLight SB-700

Nikon UK, 15 September 2010 – Nikon today is pleased to announce a new Speedlight – the SB-700. Packed with features, this is an easy-to-use, yet sophisticated flash in a compact body. It will be a welcome addition to anyone looking to develop their lighting skills and explore the options of the Nikon Creative Lighting system.
Zurab Kiknadze, Product Manager Lenses, Accessories and Software, Nikon Europe BV says: “SB-700 offers users the opportunity to expand their creative potential beyond the built-in camera flash. It integrates flawlessly with Nikon’s DSLR cameras, taking advantage of i-TTL to provide optimal results with minimum of effort.”
Inheriting the advanced features of the professional SB-900 flash, the new flash also boasts an intuitive interface and easy-to-understand operating system. It features Nikon’s i-TTL, through-the-lens metering system, ensuring accurate light measuring as well as multi-step auto zoom, which automatically detects the lens focal length and adjusts the flash output accordingly for angles of view from 24mm to 120mm.
Users have the choice of three illumination patterns, which can be quickly selected to match different shooting scenarios. The high performance Speedlight is ideal for a wide range of applications, from portrait and studio to events and night-time photography.

Built for versatility
The SB-700 is compatible with FX and DX cameras and its fast wireless control will make the flash attractive for a wide range of customers, including advanced photographers seeking to extend their Creative Lighting System. It can act as a master, controlling up to two groups of flashes and their light ratios, and can also act as a remote unit in a flash set up.
With its rotating head and built-in bounce card, the photographer can use the flash to direct the light and bounce it off ceilings or walls. The SB-700 also comes with the practical Nikon Diffusion Dome to soften the light and even the shadows of direct flash.
The flash has a mounting foot lock lever, through which the flash can be securely attached to the camera, preventing it from coming loose. There is also an optional weather-sealed mount available for outdoor photography.

Major features:
  • The new, improved LCD panel interface and an intuitive layout of switches make it quick and easy to set the features.
  •  With a maximum guide number of 38 (for an FX camera, at the standard illumination setting at ISO 100 at 120mm) the flash is powerful and versatile to suit most lighting conditions.
  • The multi-step power zoom automatically responds to the current focal length of the lens attached to the camera and covers angles of view, ranging from 24mm to 120mm.
  • Three illumination patterns can quickly be selected to match each shooting situation, making it the ideal flash for a range of scenarios. The Centre-weighted pattern offers more power and higher guide number which highlights the subject from its surroundings. The Even setting works well for indoor group shots or a flat surface whilst the Standard setting has a slight emphasis on the centre.
  • The high-speed recycling time is only approximately 2.5 seconds with NiMH batteries and alkaline batteries and approximately 3.5 seconds with lithium batteries.
  • The quick wireless control mode allows the user to change the light ratios of A and B group Speedlight units and can also act as a remote unit in the Nikon Creative Lighting System.
  • The SB-700 automatically detects flash head heat and delays the recycling time if the temperature of the flash head rises, protecting the flash from heat damage.
  • The firmware of the flash can easily be updated through Nikon DSLR cameras.
  • The SB-700 comes with fluorescent and incandescent hard, plastic-type colour filters, which are more durable, heat-resistant and easier to use than the conventional film-type filters. The flash automatically detects these two hard-type colour filters and instructs the camera to set the optimum colour temperature. The optional colour filter set SJ-4 is also available.

The OS (Optical Stabiliser) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible.  For Sony and Pentax mount, the built-in OS function of this lens can be used even if the camera body is equipped with an image sensor shift anti-shake system.  As compensation for camera shake is visible in the view finder, the photographer can easily check for accurate focus and ensure there is no subject movement.

Two FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have the performance equal to fluorite glass, and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction of colour aberration. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range and an optimum optical power layout provides superior optical quality in all shooting ranges from close-up to infinity. Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghost.

This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), ensuring a quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focus capability.  The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 140cm (55.1”) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:8.  The rounded 9 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out of focus images.  This lens is equipped with a Petal-type hood.  For digital cameras with an APS-C size image sensor, a dedicated hood adapter, which expands the length of the lens hood, is supplied.
*The Pentax mount Tele Converter cannot be used with this particular lens.  *Nikon and Pentax mounts do not have an aperture ring. Some functions may not work depending on the camera model.  *For Nikon and Canon mounts, Optical Stabiliser (OS) function will not work with film SLR cameras except Nikon F6 and Canon EOS-1V.  *For Pentax and Sony mounts, it is not possible to use the AF and the built-in OS function of this lens when attaching it to film SLR cameras as well as Pentax *ist series and K100D.  *When using the OS function of a lens with a camera which incorporates a stabiliser unit, please turn the camera’s stabiliser unit off.

Google Chrome 6 Released (03/09/2010)

It didn't seem too long ago that Google launched its first internet browser, Chrome in 2008. Two years later, it's now into its 6th version and boy, have they come a long way. From its simple, almost stark beginnings to a browser with a global market share of around 7% and increasing, Chrome is maturing into a stalwart Google product like Gmail, and looking less like one of its numerous experiments that disappear after the initial hype.

HonlPhoto Traveller8 Softbox (NEW!!!)

Honl Photo Traveller8 Softbox Review by ephotozine.com

HonlPhoto Traveller8 Softbox

Using small flashes for off-camera lighting has become ever popular, probably because of the portability and ease of which the equipment can be set up in a hurry. The Honl Photo line of light modifiers are purpose-built accessories to help achieve the look you're after with the minimum of fuss and bulk to carry around.

Here we'll take a look at the Traveller8 softbox, which is the latest addition to the Honl Photo range, most of which we took an earlier look at here.

Honl Photo Traveller8 Softbox: Specification

  • Size: appr. 11in x 9in folded
  • Materials: nylon ripstop, nylon taffeta, low density polyethylene
  • Weight: 3.75oz/107g

This accessory costs £59, which seems quite steep to me, although the quality of materials used is excellent throughout. The main body of the softbox is constructed from stiff nylon, which snaps into shape when unfolded. The softbox is designed to create a circular light, which apart from diffusing the light, should give nice catch lights in people's eyes. The one supplied for review tended to prefer forming a diamond shape instead though, although this didn't seem to impact on the overall performance of the item.

Unfolding the Traveller8 is as straightforward as can be. The white diffusion material simply needs to be vercro'd in place around the front of the softbox and it holds it's shape. All that's left to do now is to attach it to the front of a flashgun via the supplied velcro speed strap. I found it amongst the easiest of these kinds of accessories to setup, taking literally a couple of seconds.

The light produced is soft and even, falling off gradually. Due to the relative small size, and the fact there is only one layer of material to diffuse the light, there isn't much light loss to the softbox, making it suitable for use outdoors in daylight for fill. For a bit more diffusion and evenness of light I found it helps to use the plastic diffuser cap often supplied with many flashguns inside the softbox, although this certainly isn't necessary, and robs you of a little more light.

Honl Photo Traveller8 Softbox: Verdict
In use I found the Traveller8 to be a very good product on the whole, producing a good quality of light whilst remaining efficient, which can be so important when using small flashes. Even though the £59 price tag may seem a little expensive, the build quality is excellent, so much so that this accessory will probably outlast your flashes.

Overall I found it to be a useful product that is built to last.

Honl Photo Traveller8 Softbox: Pros
  • Excellent build quality
  • Compact when folded
  • Lightweight
  • Very efficient output
  • Good quality of light

Honl Photo Traveller8 Softbox: Cons
  • Maybe a touch expensive

The HonlPhoto Traveller8 Softbox is available for sell at Megacom Enterprise for B$129.00 (HonlPhoto Speed Strap included)

HonlPhoto (Flash Modifier Kit for everyday photographer)

Introduction to HonlPhoto by ephotozine.com

HonlPhoto Product

What is HonlPhoto Flash Accessories?
With any lighting, controlling the nature of the light is as important as where you place your lights. These compact light modifiers give photographers shooting with camera flashguns (strobes) greater control of the spread of illumination and even colour, opening even more creative possibilities, whilst keeping the size and weight down to a minimum. Professional photographer, David Honl devised the system and has used them himself on a variety of assignments. His website has a selection of instructional videos available to help you get the best of these accessories.

Features and Handling
The Honl Photo System centres around the Honl Speed Strap, which is essentially an inch wide rubber band with Velcro loops on the outside. On its own it seems like a bit of a gimmick, but it really comes into its own when used with the rest of the Honl system making it easy to put a bit of space between the accessories and the lens on the flash, so that nothing gets damaged due to overheating during heavy use. I normally have a strip of sticky Velcro around my flashguns for this purpose, but I found the accessories fit much more securely with the Speed Strap.

HonlPhoto  SpeedStrap

Once you have you flash Velcro'd up, you're ready to choose from one of the light modifiers in the range, depending what the look you intend to achieve. Each of the accessories have the hook half of the Velcro in just the places you need them, making swapping and changing between them a breeze.

HonlPhoto Speed Grids
A grid placed on the front of a flash narrows the beam of light emitted, allowing a certain area to be emphasized, or simply to keep light from spilling into areas you don't want it.

Those who like to indulge in a bit of DIY may have already experimented with strips of corrugated card, Corflute or drinking straws taped together to achieve the same look. Apart from looking more professional than either solution, the Honl grids are more rugged and are available with holes of either a quarter of an inch diameter, giving you more control over the nature of the light. Being completely black and bordered with a black plastic frame, light is less likely to reflect or spill onto areas of the image you don’t want it too.

Using these produces a very hard light effect, which can either be used as the main source of illumination for effect, or with a softer fill light to help lift an otherwise flat image.

HonlPhoto Speed Grids

HonlPhoto Speed Gobo/Bounce Card
Bouncing your flash off a light surface such as a ceiling will produce images with a softer quality of light than you would get with direct flash, but the problem is you often get shadows unless some of the light is directed forwards. Attaching this accessory with the white side facing the flash tube will do just that, evening out the exposure and creating a more pleasing, softer appearance, whether the flash is mounted on, or off the camera.

Flipping the card over so that the black side is facing the flash tube allows this item to be used as a Gobo, (or go-between) which can be used to control where the light from you flashgun spills. Say for example you wished to light a person from the side, but didn't want the background illuminated, you may use a Gobo to keep the light off the background in your image.

For what is essentially a piece of card, this item is very well constructed, being made from heavy-duty nylon, which is stiff and does not crease easily. The materials used mean that it is easy to keep clean, and should last a very, very long time.

HonlPhoto Speed Gobo/ Bounce Card

HonlPhoto Speed Snoot/Reflector
Available in two sizes, one 5in wide and the other 8in wide, these wrap around the flashgun to create a long snoot-like tunnel, to narrow the beam of light. This can be very useful for highlighting a specific area of an image, such as a person's hair in a portrait and the longer the tunnel is, the more narrow the beam of light will be.

As these items are lined with a reflective material, they can also be configured to function like a large bounce card. When set up like this, they function in a similar way to the popular Lumiquest Pocket Bounce diffusers, although they don't hold their shape as well when used like this. It works by throwing some light forward to fill out the shadows that normally occur when bouncing flash directly off a light ceiling. Having this second option adds to the value of this item, making it useful for general photography as well as when you wish to be creative with off-camera lighting.

The build of this item is very good, although it's not as rigid as the Speed Gobo/Bounce Card, it's fairly easy to set up in either configuration quickly.

 HonlPhoto Speed Snoot/Reflector

HonlPhoto Colour Gels
Completing the system, coloured gels for balancing the colour temperature of the flash with the ambient light or deeper colours for special effects are available. The gels are large enough to fit easily over most flashguns and have the hook Velcro fasteners along the top and bottom, making attachment quick and easy.

 HonlPhoto Colour Gels

Honl Photo Lighting Accessories Verdict
Those looking for a lasting, more professional solution for modifying the light produced by their flashgun when using them off-camera, should enjoy the extra creative options these accessories put at your disposal.

Some of these items do seem a little pricey for what they are, but if you require something long lasting, and reliable that you will be using them time and time again, these are definitely worth a look. They are built of high quality materials and are easy to set up in a hurry, so will provide good value to heavy users of off-camera lighting.

Honl Photo Lighting Accessories: Pros
  • Excellent build and materials
  • Plenty of creative options
  • Easy to set up and remove

Honl Photo Lighting Accessories: Cons
  • Price may seem a little high to casual users
  • Velcro fasteners could weaken in time

Apple May Introduce iPhone 4 With Redesigned Antenna (01/09/2010)

Apple has been getting much flak for all the reception issues that its iPhone 4 is getting. To that end, they are giving out free bumpers to anyone who purchases an iPhone 4 before 30 September. And if word on the street is true, Apple is alleged to be preparing an updated model of the iPhone 4 which will have a redesigned antenna to stop all those reception problem.

As is the case with all things Apple, we won't know if this is true or not until the time comes when they make an announcement. So for those thinking to upgrade to an iPhone 4, you might want to adopt a wait-and-see approach.
